Black Rock Shooter 2: Electric Boogaloo (Wixoss S1)
Its not Wixoss, its wecross.
What a ride this was. I was watching random openings and Wixoss’s one played. I was a big fan of Kanon Wakeshima at the time, well I still like her songs I guess. The opening looked decent but I thought it was gonna be one of those trash random seasonals nobody cared about. Flash forward a few years (until now) and I looked it up on MAL. I saw it was written by Mari Okada and assumed it would be like Black Rock Shooter and deal with feelings, depression and such. DM’d a few of my friends and decided to watch the first episode. You know, one off thing. Oh god…
A few hours pass, 12 episodes later we were devastated. I can say it played a lot like Black Rock Shooter, dealing with similar themes but it still felt fresh. It started off relatively innocent, we find out what Selectors are; chosen girls with LRIG's (the little girls inside cards), if they win a few fights and meet the right conditions they can become an Eternal Girl, and when they lose 3 battles they lose the right to be a Selector. When that dropped, one of my friends M-san asked if this is going to have some consequences like being banished to the shadow realm or dying for example. J-san read the synopsis and laughed a bit awkwardly while I said probably not, it seems like they just lose their abilities, no biggie right? Well... It didn't take long to find out its not all rainbows and sunshine after all. It seems if you lose you become the opposite of your wish. In the case of one characters that meant even thinking about making friends pained her a lot. On the other hand, becoming an eternal girl isn't all rainbows and sunshine either. I don't want to get into spoilers so I'm not going to talk about that aspect or the ending which I also liked. If this was an one off, that ending would be hella depressing but there is luckily a 2nd season which I still have to watch as of now.The animation left something to be desired still. Most of the time it looked fine, and sometimes looked amazing but the CG people distracted me way too much. The music was decent as well, and might leave me listening to the ost sometimes even after I finish the series. While I heard that the pseudo reboot and the idol spinoff are kinda bad, I’ll still try my best and watch the entire series. At least I know what awaits me in the 2nd season will be good. They kept most of the same staff so shouldn’t deviate too much.
All in all, very very good anime and I recommend you watch it.ps. imagine watching a tcg anime where there is no narration for 5 minutes explaining what one card does
