Hello,

I was originally going to make a fall 2023 anime post similar to the one I wrote about the summer sesason, however this season I am simply watching too many anime. Therefore I have decided to only cover a select few and depending on how my creativity leads me, give a bit more detail about them.

Frieren: Beyond journey’s end:

This season started off by giving us a gem with a 4 episode premiere, Frieren:
It’s an anime about an elf that after going on a journey with her fellow party members to save the world from the demon lord, goes on another journey to retrace the steps they took as a party, and hopefully get to know them better but also brings two apprentices with her. It’s basically just a slice of life fantasy travelling anime with ocassional fight here and there. I think the manga gets a bit more actiony later on but dont quote me on that. I waited for the anime to come out after reading the manga and I am not dissapointed in the slightest. It’s a real gem. We’ve got bocchi’s director working on it (not sure how much that affects the production) and a lot of talented animators. Every episode feels not just well animated but over-animated. Even simple things get a lot of attention and in the latest episode that I’ve seen the battles are just a joy, even though they feel a bit dragged out. If you’re a fan of isekai, or action, or fantasy magic anime, or slice of life this is for you. Basically its for everyone.

Shy:

Shy is an anime about a shy hero. Thats pretty much it. Every country has heroes that do hero things and it seems like there is some bad organization. I forgot their name though. They unleash people’s hearts and its up to our heroes to save them, except only Shy has successfuly saved a person without cutting their hands off. I guess she’s going to be the main force when taking down the organization. The art and animation in this one feels a bit cheap, but it’s still enjoyable to watch. It’s very stylish at times and has clever use of comic book effects.

Undead Unluck:

It’s rare that I enjoy shounen anime. This anime is great though. It’s directed by my favorite director from Shaft Yuki Yase, who also did Kubikiri Cycle and Mekakucity Actors beforehand. He also did Fire Force but I havent seen that show. The anime follows a girl, with the power of being super unlucky (unluck) and a guy who cannot die (undead), so thats a pretty self explanatory anime name. They work together basically to stay part of an organization that once hunted them, and undead’s end goal is to be able to die. Aesthetically this anime is very beautiful too. Reminiscent of Team Shinbo era Shaft and I’m glad the director is keeping that style alive even when shaft themselves has forsaken it. I am not gushing over it like I did with frieren up there, but I highly recommend this show. Go watch it, now. Seriously.

The Apothecary Diaries:

Or as I like to call it: the crack dealer diaries. This anime is great too. It follows the apothecary Maomao as she is kidnapped and sold to the royal palace. From there she becomes a lady in waiting for one of the concubines. She is highly skilled with medicine so she also gets wrapped up in other things. The animation in this one is really good too. Very good use of everything, including 3D backgrounds. Some scenes might even be rotoscoped with how true to life they feel. This anime also has really good VA and probably better than the rest of them this season.

The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess:

To be honest I’m surprised that it’s on this list too. The anime follows Terakomari who is a very weak vampire who doesnt drink blood. I dont blame her though, we’ve seen what she’s capable of when she drinks some. She shut herself in her house, but one day she just gets dragged into being a commander in an army full of morons and lunatics. Somehow they believe her that she is the strongest which is good, because if she is weak, she will get killed. The art and animation of this one is pretty average, however somehow it induces a nostalgic feeling towards anime from 2009-2010. If you’re looking for a cute and yuri anime i recommend this one as well.

So that’s the stand out anime that air this season. I’m also following stuff like 16bit sensation, mf ghost, in love with villainess and some others. If they’re worth covering I’ll cover them.

Thanks for reading and I hope you can enjoy these as much as I did.
